Description

There are two situations in which this makes sense.

There are no real 'reference spaces' in the shapefile

All we really care about is capturing the polygons/lines/points in the shapefile. They are no reference spaces in the traditional sense. For instance, a shapefile with "tree cover in city A" that contains ALL trees as individual points/polygons really doesn't warrant becoming different reference spaces. Another example is this very very detailed map of the port in Barcelona, which contains waaaay too many details to be relevant (e.g. all traffic lights), leading to 50k reference spaces. We can just merge it all into a single referencespace ('the port') instead.

Shapefile really only covers a single reference space

An interesting example came up with the shapefile of Lausanne showing that the city consists of two separate spaces. However, this is a single city, so we need to convert this into a single reference space.

I envision we should have an option when starting to process shapefiles, where you can select: this is a SINGLE reference space or these are MULTIPLE reference spaces.

Discussion and updates

New task was created

Task was assigned to Paul Hoekman

This feature was implemented, and it's now possible to either merge into a single space, or to group it in some way based on the columns in the shapefile.
